Love Made Visible

Valentine’s Day

What could be better timed than a celebration of love in February? What does love look like? From a child’s point of view, it might look like cards, red hearts and chocolates which are among the many visual expressions of Valentine’s Day.

Let’s look a little deeper at what love looks like in day to day life. Parents love their children intensely; I’ve both experienced and witnessed this powerful force. Parental love often looks like breakfast on the table every morning, even if the parent is sick, tired or not hungry. It looks like the patience to help a young child put on a snowsuit in spite of resistance just because it’s cold outside. It looks like the courage to insist on holding hands in the parking lot to keep a child safe. Those are just the deeds that can be witnessed before 8:30 a.m. most days.

Yes, the day to day things that parents do are love made visible. Just for the fun of it, notice how many acts of love you engage in each day. You might be surprised. Then treat yourself to something loving along the lines of self- care,  a bubble bath, a cup of your favorite tea or a piece of chocolate. One of my favorites is to read and ponder a poem. On Valentine’s Day and I would suggest on a regular basis, you deserve it!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
